In our Foundation Years program, students from Kindergarten to Grade 4 are nurtured through experiential opportunities. Learners are supported to take risks, problem-solve, collaborate, and make connections, all aimed at bridging their learning with the world around them.
Mentorship
Our youngest are guided and inspired by the older students they encounter daily, as well as by their peers in the Junior School.
Cross-Grade learning
Due to SMS's unique setup of having Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12 all on one campus, there are many opportunities for cross-grade learning. Here are two examples from this year:
Our Grade 3 students welcomed a special guest from the Senior School, SY STEM Teacher, Dr. William FitzGerald to provide some insights into matter.
As part of STEM-X week at SMS, the Grade 2s welcomed a special visitor from the Senior School into their classroom - Mr. Jones, STEM-X Lead and Curriculum Assistant. The little scientists had been learning about the chemical and physical ways that things change, and Mr. Jones was there to demonstrate using edible slime. He wasn’t the only guest, the Grade 2s were also joined by Ms. Walton and the Grades 10 and 11 Culinary Arts students.

Students benefit from our expansive 22-acre campus, featuring woodlands and trails ideal for exploration. They actively engage in investigating our outdoor environment, enhancing their learning experience.
HEALTHY LUNCHES
Our Foundation Years students are treated to a nutritious hot lunch every day courtesy of Sage Dining that accommodates allergies, eating preferences, and religious dietary practices.
