SMS English 10 & English 11 – these are mandatory credit-courses toward graduation in BC designed to meet the needs of international students. As such, they offer twice the time as a public-school summer English 10 or 11 courses. This extra time allows the student to ask questions, revise work, get feedback and improve essays, and read more extensively and deeply.  By taking the SMS English 10 or 11 course, students are challenging themselves to be better learners: more active in class, more motivated to go beyond the minimum, and more interested in sharing ideas. The students who take this course return in September ready to succeed in the next level of English with a newfound sense of confidence and the preparation to reach their goals.

The average classroom in 2017 is very multicultural, with refugees, international students, very strong students and other students that struggle to engage due to learning differences. Therefore, being proficient in differentiation is extremely important for the modern teacher.

SMS has developed a TESL Certificate course designed to meet these challenges. Teachers will learn the methodology and techniques that have emerged over the past 5 decades on second language acquisition. In this journey, teachers will also study the research by contemporary researchers on how to engender cultural and language fluency in the class using strategies that benefit ALL learners, both second language and native speakers.
