SMS English Summer Course 2018

The SMS English summer course is a rigorous five-week program for students wanting to get ahead and prepare themselves to increase their level of English, prepare for IELTS and TOEFL tests and learn strategies to get top marks in their English courses. This course will run from June 23rd to July 27th, 2018 and provides a total of 100 teacher contact hours of instruction. An Educational Assistant will also be present in the classroom for optimal teacher student ratios.

The program is divided into morning classroom lessons and afternoon learning activities. The course outline gives an overview of the morning classroom lesson content. Very experienced teachers, who not only have their BC Teaching Certification, but have also taught locally and internationally, will teach our English classes. The afternoon learning activities focus on getting students out of the classroom into learning programs and activities throughout Victoria.

Students will have the opportunity to attend the Canada Day Festivities, the Victoria International Buskers Festival, and other exciting experiences to make the summer a time of learning and adventure. These festivals are the setting for a variety of writing activities that will give students the chance to experience and write about some of the most exciting summer events Victoria has to offer.

Further, the students will get to explore Victoria in guided activities. The chance to see some of the places popular with local people that tourists and international students rarely get to experience will be a part of this program: Swan Lake, Goldstream Park, Mount Work, and Witty’s Beach are just a few of the amazingly beautiful regional parks that will be visited.

The SMS Summer English course will give the students the opportunity to see some of the most popular tourist sites, which will be combined with learning activities to give purpose and value to the students. Butchart Gardens, whale watching, and Craigdarroch Castle are just a few examples of the places students will explore which help make Victoria one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Learning English is best achieved by USING English, so the SMS English program has included many fun, experiential learning activities such as rock climbing, sushi making, and even learning about Canadian history at Fort Rodd Hill, the military fort that protected Victoria for more than 100 years.

Students will benefit from the more than 100 hours of learning time in Canada. For students who want to achieve top grades in English and move more quickly into regular English classes during the school year, St. Margaret’s School’s Summer English course is the advantage that will help them achieve this goal!
