A Family-Like Community

Our elementary school program is a small, family-like community where teachers develop strong relationships with their students and their families. Classroom activities are designed to extend students’ natural curiosity and actively engage them in the learning process. Our students learn to be curious, to work together and to love learning. They develop a solid foundation for successful academic achievement, positive peer relationships and a growing sense of responsibility for their own learning.

Early Learning (JK and SK)

Early Learning at SMS is a curriculum-based program for Junior Kindergarten (4-year-olds, and a limited number of 3-year-olds) and Kindergarten (5-year-olds). Experienced, nurturing educators provide an emotionally supportive learning environment that piques the natural curiosity of young girls, and experiences that enhance successful learning through play, exploration and social interaction. The program includes the gradual introduction of literacy and numeracy as well as specialist instruction in French, Mandarin in JK, Music, and Physical Education.

Our Early Learning Program offers:

  • Licensed ECE Educators: Our staff are licensed early childhood educators who hold university degrees in education, literature, early childhood education and psychology.
  • Specialist Teachers: Students also benefit from lessons with specialist teachers in French, Mandarin, Physical Education, and weekly visits with the teacher-librarian in our school library.
  • Continuity in education: Students can be educated at SMS from early learning to grade 12
  • Recognition in Excellence: The early years program is led by the recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award of Excellence Susan Middlemiss, Early Learning Centre Coordinator. She was recognized for her leadership, exemplary early childhood education practices, and her commitment to help build the foundation children need to make the best possible start in life.

“The program is diverse and the girls are integrated with the school, which makes the transition to Kindergarten very easy. The quality of instruction and the learning environment are unparalleled in any other daycare or preschool setting I’ve seen.”
