The 2018/2019 school year has been a whirlwind so far from Spirit Week, to Outweek, to International Day of the Girl and everything in between.

With SY students already visiting college fairs and Grade 12’s making plans for the future, we thought we should take a moment to learn more about the girls who are leading the charge this year.

Meet our Head Girls –

Head Girl, Victoria Lee

How many years have you been at SMS?
14 years

Why did you want to be a Head Girl?

I wanted to be Head Girl because I am passionate about helping each one of our students grow and flourish, and turn what students want to see at SMS into a reality. I want students to know that their opinions, input and personalities are important. I’ve been a member of the SMS family since I was in Junior Kindergarten, and now, as I begin my Grade 12 year, I want to make sure every student, no matter what grade, feels comfortable to share their voice.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

I’m excited to see how this year’s theme, H.U.G. (Help Us Grow), develops! I know that this year will be filled with so much growth, not only for me as an individual, but as our school of one becomes even more united. This year also marks SMS’s 110th year and I’m looking forward to seeing where next year takes us. Amongst all the excitement, I’m also sad that it’s my last year at SMS. I can’t remember a time when this school wasn’t like a family to me, but once a member of the family, always a member.

What is your favourite event of the year?

Spirit week! It honestly brings the school together and draws the competitive nature out of everyone. I love the crazy energy everyone has; plus, it’s just a week full of excuses to scream while cheering on your team… GO CANMORE!

Favourite colour?

Blue

Favourite food?

I’m always in the mood for sushi! I could literally eat it 365 days a year for breakfast, lunch and dinner 🙂

Favourite hobby/sport/pastime

I really love cooking!

If you could interview anyone in the world, who would it be?

Claire Wineland. She honestly inspires me in every way. Her outlook and love for the little things in life is incredible regardless of the hardships she struggled with her whole life. (Claire passed away from Cystic Fibrosis on September 4, a day after this interview).

Team cat or team dog?

Team cat.

Why did you want to be a Head Girl?

I’ve always looked up to the heads at SMS because I know that everything they do is with the students in mind. I wanted to be someone who students felt they could not only talk to about the fun things, but also someone who they were comfortable talking to about things that might need a bit of work, or the things that we need to pay more attention to. Everyone is a leader in their own way and being a head doesn’t mean you have to be an extrovert or outgoing. I wanted to help students realize that every single one of them has the potential to be an incredible leader.

What are you most looking forward to this school year?

I’m really looking forward to the Big Sister Little Sister program. I’m so excited to get to work with all our students and see those connections and relationships form. I love the program so much, and hope by the end of the year everyone will feel the same way that I do!

What is your favourite event of the year?

I can’t choose between housewarming and the Halloween carnival!

What new things or changes can students expect to see this year?

I’m super excited to say that this year I will be working on changing the Big Sister Little Sister program to fix some of the kinks, as well as enhancing the parts of it that work really well.

Favourite colour?

Purple!

Favourite food?

Definitely ice cream!

I love dancing and choreographing in my spare time 🙂

Why did you want to be a Head Girl?

I would like to take the responsibility to lead the “LET’S” Res Council this year, help create a “home away from home” environment on campus, and organize pragmatic, enjoyable activities to bring the St. Margaret’s School community together as one. Also, I see the expectation of English-Speaking has been an ever-present goal and I would like to enforce the goal by encouraging and leading the conversation to make it come true.

What are you most looking forward to this school year? (Don’t say graduating lol)

I am most looking forward to grad Halloween costumes this year since we have so many ideas for the theme and all the bonding activities Res Council has planned for the school and the community.

What is your favourite event of the year?

My favourite event of the year must be Saanich Fair at both the beginning of the year and at the end of the year, it’s a great opportunity for students to bond and celebrate together.

What new things or changes can students expect to see this year?

Students can see more SMS/SGS trips this year where we’ve worked hard to plan fun activities and make them worth their time. What’s more, Residence adds a new element of the year — community dinner, where each house is hosting a dinner for the whole residence with the theme of different continents and rotates each month.
