Happy Friday.

This Friday’s feature is one of our two Grade 7 teachers, family man, triathlete, dog lover – Mr. Jones.

What year did you start working at SMS?

What grade/subject do you teach or what is your role?

STEM 7 teacher

What is your favourite unit to teach?

Science: Evolution, natural selection, and biodiversity… because I lived in Ecuador for 2 years and had the chance to go to the Galápagos islands, where Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution were solidified. All things Math really, because we can have lots of fun learning new things and how it relates to our world!

What book do you give most as a gift?

Hmm… not sure that I’ve given out a book as a gift multiple times, but it would probably be The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. It’s my favourite book.

What other SMS staff member would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with and why?

Anyone who has chocolate!

What is your favourite food & local restaurant?

I love pizza, so… maybe Pizzeria Prima Strada!

What is your hobby/obsession?!

Besides my kids? Triathlons… I either swim, bike, or run pretty much every day. And I love hockey, but I haven’t played for a few years (Go Oilers!).

What is your secret talent or superpower?

I can laminate posters like a boss, apparently.

What is one thing you can’t live without?

Sleep. I don’t get nearly enough, but I love it!

What one piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

Relax and don’t worry so much.

What habit do you do everyday that you feel is integral to the success of your day?

Do something active. It helps me to clear my mind, gives me something to focus on, and the rush of endorphins gives me a boost.

What are you binge watching right now, if anything?

Just finished watching season 4 of The Affair. The writing is phenomenal.

Cat or Dog?

Dog! I have a 13-year-old Australian Shepherd named Happy. I don’t like cats.
