As 2018 comes to a close, it is important that we reflect on all of the great opportunities and experiences at SMS! Part two of our club review looks to do just that!

GSA

The GSA (gender and sexuality alliance) is comprised of students from grades 7-12. The GSA meets weekly on Tuesdays at lunch to build community, raise awareness of LGBTQ issues and realities and provides support to one another. Recently, one of our students has designed a new GSA logo based on the SMS logo. We have also been working on a workshop for staff regarding raising awareness of heteronormativity in terms of how we use language and providing possibilities of a gender-neutral address for students. It has been an exciting year so far!

Dance Club

This year’s Dance Club has taken on a different form and tone from our previous few years cheer team. The SMS Poms have put their pom-poms down to explore a different dance form. Led by students Alix Corwin and Elisabeth Hallsor, with support from teacher, Ms. Paddock, the dancers have been hard at work over the first term. Beginning with open practices, the club recently held auditions as they prepare for big things in Terms 2 & 3! A sneak-peek was provided at the final winter break assembly and it is clear there are more great things to come!

Golf Club

This two-term club (Fall & Spring), came out swinging this fall. Meeting twice a week, students travel to local links, Cedar Hill Golf Course, for Pro instruction and a few quick holes.  The group enjoyed the excellent fall weather Victoria provided this year and looks forward to picking back up after the spring break!

Drama Club

Every week, an enthusiastic group of students meet in the Drama room say “Yes, AND” to games, improvisation and dramatic fun. This group has flare! Led by teacher sponsor, Mademoiselle Humphries, who recently appeared on stage herself in the Operetta, The Mikado, students have the opportunity to express as anyone and anything!

First Lego League

In Term 1, the girls have been coding, building and problem-solving for TWO First Lego League Robotics teams. They have been keeping coaches hopping with extra extended practices, weekend scrimmages and two weekly meetings. The team members love working with coaches: Mr. Jones and Mrs. Formosa!
