“On this International Day of the Girl, let us recommit to supporting every girl to develop her skills, enter the workforce on equal terms and reach her full potential.” — UN Secretary-General António Guterres

Since 2012, October 11 has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. A day that aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights.

This year, SMS hosted its 4th Annual MY Empowerment Day–a day to celebrate our girls alongside their strong female role models.

The morning kicked off over breakfast in Alexis Hall with a powerful presentation from Olympic Silver Medalist and mentor in residence Lindsay Jennerich, who talked about self-confidence and self-esteem and how to harness both.

Following breakfast, the girls and their female role models gathered in the South Gym to take part in a team building activity put on by Drum Victoria. As students and guests pounded their drums in harmony, it was amazing to see the group come together, laugh and share enjoyment in an activity that was brand new to most.

“I really liked the fact that I was able to meet some of the important and inspiring women in our girls’ lives. It was special to be able to sit down and eat breakfast together. Furthermore, I really liked sitting around the circle and watching everyone’s faces during the drumming activity. It was special, inclusive and so much fun,” said Grade 7 teacher, Nicole Carvalho.

As Vancouver Island’s only all-girls school it’s important that we take time to honour and celebrate special events such as this one.
