On Thursday, March 7, the SMS Outreach team held their largest fundraiser of the year—the annual benefit concert. This years’ theme was ‘Cirque de SMS’ a play on Cirque de Soleil, with funds from the event supporting Women In Need (WIN), a Victoria-based women’s cooperative dedicated to creating a community where women can freely pursue a passionate and fulfilled life.

The concert was a brilliant showcase of the SMS values, with students from the Middle and Senior Years putting on a display of courage, leadership, excellence, integrity and of course talent, all in the name of service with love. Acts included singing, dancing, poetry, musical performances and even magic, which kept the audience on the edge of their seat all night.

“There was not a single moment when I was not entirely drawn in.  In a word, I was enchanted by the entire performance,” said interim Head of School, Mr. Bruce-Lockhart.

The circus-themed event went off without a hitch in front of a packed house thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Outreach Committee, the Outreach Executive, and teachers Ms. Lee and Ms. Carvalho, alongside a solid crew of volunteers.

“Everyone came together and pulled it off, everyone turned it up on the day of the show, the energy was amazing, everyone had fun, and each team came together and worked well (backstage crew, concession, MC’s),” said Ms. Lee.

The event raised $1000 through admission and donations, with all proceeds going to WIN. Earlier in the year, Outreach also held a clothing drive in conjunction with the Trashion Committee, and all the clothes from that were also donated to WIN.

“The girls wanted to choose a group that we have worked with before because they really noticed the impact they could make on local women in Victoria,” said Ms. Carvalho.
