One of St. Margaret’s newest additions, Ms. Humphries, may spend most of her time at school teaching French, but when the curtain drops on November 2, she can be seen starring in the comic operetta The Mikado.

Humphries, whose parents are both singers, got her start in musical theatre as a child and went on to obtain three music degrees before pursuing a career as a professional opera singer. She sang professionally for 10 years and spent two years in Vienna and touring around Germany.

After retiring from her singing career, she went on to complete her teaching degree in Scotland. After teaching overseas for a year she taught in the Ontario school system before moving to beautiful British Columbia and settling in Victoria.

While her SMS timetable may be packed full of French classes, over the last five months her spare time has been spent rehearsing for her role as Katisha (the antagonist) in The Mikado, a comic operetta put on by the Gilbert and Sullivan Society.

“The Mikado has always been on my bucket list, so when the opportunity came up I auditioned and was lucky enough to get the part,” said Humphries. “It’s a really fun role because my character Katisha is a character role. I get to wear an elaborate costume and become someone totally different.”

The role requires great dedication and long nights spent on set—for the past five months rehearsals have been three times a week for three hours a night.

For students who might be interested in pursuing musical theatre, Humphries encourages getting involved in the community as much as possible. (As long as it doesn’t interfere with school work).

“There are lots of opportunities for kids to engage in community shows and group theatre. If you have the time to dedicate to extra-curricular activities, it opens a whole new world of people, networks and direction,” she said.

The Mikado’s characters, storytelling, themes and satire of human nature is funny and family friendly.
