The SMS U11 Sugar Pandas Basketball Team was on the big stage scrimmaging at halftime of the University of Victoria Vikes Women’s basketball team some weeks back. The team comprised of Siena Mizel, Andrea Rojas, Joy Zhang, Kyla Gunn, Anya Walker, Hannah Jeon, Anna Mallory and Jamie Harker thrilled the home team crowd with text book lay-ups, tenacious defense and spirited end-to-end action. It was great to see so many SMS parents and fellow SMS Grade 3, 4, 5, and 6 basketball teammates come cheer them on. See below for a recap of the Vikes game by Jamie Harker. ~ From the SMS Basketball Coaches
On Saturday, January 31st, 2015 the University of Victoria Vikes continued their winning streak against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, winning by one basket (2 points). The final score was 80-78. There were four Vikes players that scored in double digits: Jessica Renfrew (#4) scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds; Amira Giannattasio (Jen-a-tas-eo) (#3) scored 20 points; Jenna Bugiardini (#13) scored 16 and Cassandra Goodis (#2) had 13 points and 5 assists.
Giannattasio took the final short jump shot to lead the Vikes to a win and the playoffs. The Vikes improved their record to 9-7 while the Pronghorns are now 4-12. In an interview seconds after the game an overwhelmed Giannattasio said:
"Coach always says to just keep shooting and don't think about it and that's what I did. We needed to be more consistent and tonight we were. We had a lot of mental toughness and came back hard. It's so surreal. I have no words for how I feel right now." *
The Vikes had 7.2 seconds to score and Giannattasio remained calm and took her time with the winning shot. If it was me I would of just thrown up a shot and hoped it went in. Here is a video of the winning basket. See if you can spot all the SMS fans in their red team gear. Vikes Buzzer Beater Video
All of the SMS U11 Sugar Pandas basketball team was at the game because we got to play a scrimmage at halftime. Although some of us were really nervous most of us had a lot of fun.
