Faculty Friday

Every couple of weeks we will be publishing a Q&A with a teacher or staff member to help us get to know, and showcase the amazing people we have working at SMS.

This week, we interviewed Louise Huneck. You may know her as the art teacher, but there is a lot more to her than meets the eye!

Louise, who hails from California, started teaching at SMS in 1986…31 years ago! She has been teaching the foundations of art to hundreds of girls ever since.

What grade/subject do you teach?
Currently, I teach grades 7-12 Art.

What is your favourite subject/unit to teach?
My personal passion right now is sculpting, so I’m really into teaching that. But I also love teaching drawing and painting because those are the foundational skills that everyone should learn.

What book do you give most as a gift?
I don’t have one go-to book. I give books as gifts a lot, but I usually try to give something specific to the person or give them a book that will challenge them. Or sometimes, I just see something on the shelf that jumps out at me.

Which other SMS staff member would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with?
I like the people I work with way too much to trap anyone on an island with me.

What is your favourite food & local restaurant?
My favourite restaurant is Ebizo and my favourite food to de-stress is sushi. My favourite dessert is Crème Brule from The Empress Hotel.

What is your hobby/obsession?
Windsurfing! I once fell into a school of jellyfish and lived to tell about it.

I truly love being outdoors—hiking, walking, kayaking etc.

What is your secret talent or superpower?
I can make something aesthetic out of anything, give me a piece of trash and I can make something with it…but that’s an obvious one.

I think windsurfing and outdoor sports is my secret talent.

What is one thing you can’t live without?
Being outdoors every single day. I love everything about being outside, especially the smells.

If you had a billion dollars, what would you be doing with your life?
I would be a full-time artist and be more heavily involved in the environmental movement.

Last year I entered the Sooke Art Show and my work won awards for both social commentary and excellence. I was also named as an artist to watch, which is so cool and I will be returning again this year.

Little known fact?
I love horses, even though I don’t own any.
