Every few weeks we will be publishing a Q&A with a teacher or staff member to help us get to know, and showcase the amazing people we have working at SMS.
This week, we interviewed a newer face to SMS, Physics and Math teacher, Wonjin Kim,
What year did you start working at SMS?
I started working at SMS in September of 2017.
What grade/subject do you teach?
This year I am teaching Science 9, Pre-calculus 11, Pre-calculus 12, AP Calculus 12 and Physics 12.
What is your favourite subject/unit to teach?
It’s really difficult to pick just one favourite subject or unit, but I have to say that the cell biology unit in Science 9 is one of my all-time favourites. There are so many cool cells and tissues that you can explore under the microscope that don’t require any money or effort to acquire. For example, the students in Science 9 and I have already checked out aquatic micro organisms from Swan Lake, cheek epithelial cells from inside our own mouths, and onion root tips undergoing active mitosis - and we are only a few weeks into our biology unit!
What book do you give most as a gift?
What other SMS staff member would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with?
If I am going for practicality, I would definitely pick Ms. Stannard because she seems to know all there is to know about surviving in the outdoors. Also, she could probably get us off the island in her outrigger canoe.
If I am picking someone to enjoy my time with, I would probably pick Mr. Luchka because he is full of interesting and quirky stories. Some of the girls might think that the teachers only talk about school things at the lunch table in Alexis Hall, but really, I just sit there listening to Mr. Luchka talk about pipelines, Bitcoin and rock music.
What is your favourite food & local restaurant?
My favourite food is fried chicken. My favourite local restaurant has changed a few times over the years, but I keep coming back to the Korean fried chicken from Chicken 649 on Quadra Street. I’m not even paid by them or anything, but I talk about their chicken ALL the time.
What is your hobby/obsession?!
Sports sports sports. You know how YouTube recommends videos for you based on your view history and preferences? My recommended videos section is inundated with soccer and tennis videos. In my free time, my favourite thing to do is watch sports and play sports. Did I mention that I like sports?
What is your secret talent or superpower?
I ate an apple in two bites once… Does that count?
What is one thing you can’t live without?
Laughter. It sounds cheesy I know, but the quality of my day gets decided by how much I laugh and how much the people around me laugh. The students in my classes know that I am not afraid to resort to awful dad jokes if it means I can get the class laughing and having a good time.
If you had a billion dollars, what would you be doing with your life?
It’s been a dream of mine for a long time to find creative, technology-based ways to deliver 21st-century education to children living in underprivileged regions of the world. If those children are going to try to break the cycle of poverty dominating their lives and pursue their calling, then it’s my belief that they need to be equipped with certain knowledge and skills first. If I had the money to take on an initiative like this, I would do it in a heartbeat.
