Ms. Batson favours the “real” part of science, getting to experience and do experiments hands-on with her students. Bringing context into what is learned from the textbook is important to her, and these experiments are often related to day-to-day life, such as the time her chemistry class made bars of soap. She appreciates how the small classes make it easier to facilitate these fun projects, and how enthusiastic the students are.
She’s always busy, with some project always on the go, but she is still incredibly passionate about the subject. She spent time as a chemist before becoming a teacher so she tries to keep up to date on current research. She tries to promote that same enthusiasm in her students through helping organize events like Ms Infinity Day, which introduced the girls to the career possibilities that science can offer.
Why SMS? “SMS gives opportunities for every girl to feel connected, succeed, shine, have the opportunity to be involved, to develop her strengths and feel comfortable enough to try new things she would shy away from at other schools. Our teachers truly care, support, encourage and challenge girls to push themselves outside their comfort zones.”
