Ms. Stannard believes that physical activity is a life-long practice, with incredible implications to both physical and emotional health. She strives to offer, through P.E., a safe place for the girls to explore their abilities, and places huge importance on the value of participation regardless of skill level. She also oversees all of the sports teams at SMS, from ensuring there’s good equipment to organizing tournaments. She has coached many of the teams herself, from badminton to basketball, and has more than a few provincial championships under her belt. She says she feels an equal measure of pride when students continue to play sports in post-secondary, but also when non-athletes challenge themselves in gym class.
Ms. Stannard has also organized the annual Strathcona trip since her first year in 1985, and still calls it a “great program.” She has fond memories of her first ocean kayaking trip there, and especially likes hearing when alumnae go back to the park years later, which makes the work well worth it.
Why SMS? “There are opportunities here for exploration, growth and development that might not be offered in other places. And if the student wants to try something new I don’t think anyone’s going to turn them away.”
