Ms. Jane Leavitt has been a Drama in Education and Theatre Specialist for many years. Her work experiments with the forms and conventions of Drama in Education and Theatre performance. Drama in Education is always concerned with what it means to be human and the variety of ways we have in sharing our stories and experiences. She feels that it reaches the very core of what it means to be part of a society, a culture and a family.
Theatre is about performance, and along the way Ms. Leavitt teaches skills such as voice, movement, acting, tech, stage managing and production. Ms. Leavitt gets excited when the students take ownership and become committed to their work. She can then become a facilitator and watch the magic unfold.
For many years, Ms. Leavitt has travelled the world studying indigenous theatre, cultures and languages. She feels that SMS is a good home for her because of the wide variety of people from around the world that are part of the SMS community. What folks might not know about Ms. Leavitt is that she is co-founder of Turn Around Projects of the Arts, a not-for-profit organization that educates impoverished students around the world. Recently she created Artes del Mundo, an Arts in Education program that takes professional artists, musicians, dancers, students and crafts people to SOS Children’s Villages in Ecuador.
Why SMS? "Educating girls quite possibly yields a higher rate of return than any other investment available in the developing world."
