Ms. Lam has been taking on the incredibly demanding task of providing laundry services at SMS since 1996. All of the linens and clothes in Residence go through her, as well as tablecloths, sheets for the infirmary, and even the smocks for the Junior School art room. She also does small repairs, for example when someone’s uniform is missing a button. It is important that she keep on top of everything, so it helps that she is very organized, and has figured out patterns and systems over the years. She likes seeing the residence girls when they drop off their bags in the morning, as she says the people here are very friendly.
The job involves very early and long days, and is increasingly busy as the year goes on. But, whenever it gets too hectic, Ms. Lam enjoys walking around the campus on her coffee breaks, or going for long runs after work. After sixteen years, it’s become a matter of timing her day to precision.
