How to Apply

SMS admits students for the upcoming September on a continuous basis. Applications are accepted year-round, but we encourage applicants to apply as early as possible as space in each grade as well as our boarding facilities is limited.

The purpose of the admissions process is to help future students and their families become more familiar with St. Margaret’s and to help the School get to know the student. Our Admissions Team works closely with families to make the application process as straightforward as possible.

Step 1: Explore our School

We encourage you to explore our website to discover what makes St. Margaret’s School an exceptional place to learn. We also welcome you to ask us questions, come in for a tour or even spend a day as an SMS student.

Step 2: Apply

You can apply online. Please provide the school with all required supporting documents as well as your application fee (CAD $225) – your application is not complete until the School receives these items.

Step 3: Placement Assessment

The placement assessment is used to determine a student’s strengths, weaknesses and readiness to begin classes at SMS. We understand that this can be an intimidating process for students and their parents and do all we can to make the process comfortable and informal.

ECE (Three-year olds and Junior Kindergarten): Our Admissions Office will invite your family to come into the School. During your visit, the student will spend classroom time with the teacher while parents meet with the Junior School Principal.

Kindergarten - Grade 6: Our Admissions Office will invite your family to come into the School. During this visit, the student will spend a half-day or full-day of classroom time with the teacher to get to know the other students, the teacher and the School. Parents will meet with the Junior School Principal and set up a time for the student to return later in the month for a placement assessment.

Grades 7 - 12: Our Admissions Office will arrange a time for the student to participate in an interview with our Director of Admissions and write a placement evaluation. This typically takes place at our school, but alternate arrangements can be made for students living outside of Victoria.

International English Language (IEL) Program: Students are accepted based upon their academic achievement, references, and demonstrated effort and participation at their pervious school(s) and community. IEL students are required to attend a two-week orientation at the end of August, where they will participate in English language proficiency testing as well as morning classes, which allow teachers to meet and evaluate each student.

Applicants from China: In order to better provide an in-person interview opportunity for all Chinese applicants, we have partnered with Vericant. Vericant will conduct interviews with our applicants in mainland China, recording the interview on video as well as collecting short writing samples. Vericant does not evaluate candidates but sends the interview materials to the SMS admissions team for review. The Vericant interview will give you an excellent opportunity to showcase your personality and skills to our admissions team and is a required component of the competed application for all Chinese applicants. Read more and schedule a Vericant interview.

Step 4: Decision

Our Admissions Office will inform you of the School’s decision within three weeks of completing the admissions process. To formally accept an offer for a place at St. Margaret’s School you will need to complete an enrollment agreement and return this to the Admissions Office, along with a deposit.
