General Databases

A collection of magazine, newspaper and journal databases, which covers a wide variety of subjects such as business, education, health and popular interest. Many of the online articles users can retrieve are full text.

Grade 7 - 12.
Use this to locate articles from Canadian magazines and newspapers, CBC radio and TV transcripts, Canadian Global Almanac, Gage Canadian Dictionary and Thesaurus. Also contains reference books, biographies, images, maps, and flags from Canadian and international sources.

For middle - high school.
A place to find general information on a variety of core subjects from Science to Literature to History. Results arranged to show the variety of sources they are taken from, such as newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, primary source documents, multimedia records and more. Search by keyword or by topic.

Search for articles with images - including charts, photos, maps, and illustrations.

Grade 7 - 12.
Presents multiple points of view on current social issues, especially as seen from a Canadian focus, and Includes magazine and newspaper articles from the world’s top political and societal publications, radio and TV transcripts, primary source documents, images, videos, and web links.

Grade K - 5.
A place for the beginning searcher to find magazine articles, newspaper articles, encyclopedia entries and more on a variety of topics ranging from animals to history to stories. Lexile (reading) levels of the information found go up to Grade 5. Search by keyword or by topic to find information for elementary school and middle school. There is also a dictionary.

Grade K - 8
A full text database for elementary and middle school research. Search thousands of journal articles. A place to find magazine articles, biographies, images and more on a variety of topics for students in grades K-8. It is similar to Searchasaurus but includes more categories/topics to search (such as geography and languages arts) and more advanced search options. Includes lexile (reading) levels for the results found.

Specialized Databases

This database provides journal coverage for most academic areas of study, including biological sciences, economics, education, physics, chemistry, ethnic studies, communications, computer sciences, engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical sciences, women's studies, and many more.

Includes articles, company profiles, news, and country profiles from over 10,000 journals in the field of Economics, with full text provided for more than 2,100 journals going back to 1965.

Grade 7 - 12.
A good way to research international news and events in a wide variety of subject areas. Browse by topic, country or headlines from major newspapers. Includes newspapers, magazines, journals, reference works, web sites, primary sources, videos, and more.

A database of eBook reference titles covering such subjects as Arts, Biography, Business, Education, Environmental Studies, History, Law, Literature, Medicine, Multicultural Studies, Nation & World, Religion, Science and Social Sciences.

A full text database of articles from Canadian and International journals, magazines and reference content from Gale, all with a Canadian focus. Includes Canada's national newspaper, The Globe and Mail; Maclean's weekly magazine; Canadian News Facts; and reference materials, such as the Canadian Parliamentary Guide and Canadian Newsmakers.

A health database that provides easy-to-understand consumer health information. A great place to start for a basic medical definition, health article or basic overview of a health-related topic. (Use MedlinePlus for more detailed health and medical information.)

Encyclopedias

Grade 5 - 12
Provides information on Canadian history, art, music, science, geography, culture and politics, and famous Canadians.

The leading source of British Columbia information. Contains the Encyclopedia of British Columbia and The Encyclopedia of Raincoast Place Names, as well as many more resources.

Grade K - 3
Kid-friendly version of the World Book Encyclopedia. Use this general encyclopedia to find articles, pictures, maps, timelines, activities, and Web links to all sorts of current and historical topics. A dictionary is included.

The information here is aimed at a slightly higher level than the “Kids” version. Includes links to international head-line news as well.

Grade 9 - ADULT.
A good place to start when you need to define your topic, or just get an overview of its many aspects. Includes links to major newspapers.
