Post Secondary Planning

Services Provided- Personal interviews by appointment (or by chance) with qualified teacher-counselors, usually with students in Graduation Program years (grades 10 -12), but not exclusively
- Personal Interest Inventories (internet, paper)
- University Information Night in the fall
- University and college representatives from major schools across Canada, the United States, and even Europe, come to the school to meet with the students to discuss the programs they offer; these seminars are usually in the library. They are announced in the daily announcements with a lot of advance notice
- Informing students through daily announcements about other opportunities such as scholarships and bursaries
- SMS is invited to special events at other independent schools if they are hosting post-secondary information programs
- Passing on relevant information via email to students (the students must provide counselors with accurate and working emails for this to be successful)
- Bulletin boards with posters advertising opportunities
- Posters around the school advertising post-secondary events and opportunities
- CAPS office is overflowing with university and college brochures and calendars
- The school has many computers for the students to use for their university applications; most applications are done on line now. Students may request individual assistance with the process or complete the application package independently.
- Students have access to publications that rank Canadian universities and colleges to help with their decision making.
- Transcripts are sent efficiently and rapidly from the Student Records Office.
- Excellent communication with Academic Advisors; Head Mrs. McGregor and other administrators meet with each student and pass on information to counselors
- In-service with the staff so that they can support the girls' education plans and post-secondary applications
- Information on getting letters of reference
- Detailed Education Plan in Planning 10 classes carried on with the Graduation Transition Program
- Enabling students' attendance at the Education and Career Fair at the Victoria Conference Centre
- TOEFL preparation classes
- Follow-up with Graduation Transition Program (introduced in Planning 10 and sustained contact until completion)
