Weather Closure Protocol

Weather conditions in Victoria can occasionally become severe enough to make it difficult for staff and students to get to school due to unsafe or impassable road conditions, power outages, flooding and/or danger of falling trees and other hazards. 

In all cases, the safety of our staff and our students is foremost in determining whether SMS should be closed, closed early or the opening delayed due to weather conditions. 

Communication

The decision to cancel or close the school will be made as early as practical to provide parents with information before they start their commute and reduce the likelihood of students arriving before the closure is announced.    

If the decision is made to close the school, it will be communicated on the homepage of our website as well as through the following radio stations: 

• CFAX 1070 AM  
• 107.3 KOOL FM  
• 100.3 FM the Q  
• 91.3 The Zone FM  
• 98.5 FM the Ocean  
• 103.1 Jack FM  
• 90.5 FM CBC 

In the absence of a message indicating closure, the school will be open for all families who choose to send their children to school.

If the School is Open

We encourage your first consideration to be for your own safe travel. Because weather conditions and snowfall will vary depending on where you reside, it is your decision to send your child to school or not.  As with any absence, please phone (250) 479-7171 to inform the school if your daughter will be staying home. 

Staff absences may prevent the school from operating entirely as usual, but we will work to make the day a safe and positive experience for all our students. 

If the School is Closed

We will ensure that any students who are in the school prior to a decision being made are accommodated. Parents whose children arrive at the school will be contacted by phone to collect their children. 

House mothers will remain at the school to supervise the boarding students and the school will ensure meals are provided.
