Intermediate Programme, Grades 4 to 6
The Intermediate Programme builds on skill development and experiences
of the primary years, providing students with a solid foundation for
successful academic achievement, positive peer relationships and a
growing sense of responsibility for their own learning. The Intermediate
curriculum at Saint Margaret's relies on both instruction of basic skills
and the integration of themes. This provides a meaningful, structured
learning environment within which the students develop individual skills.
Students also have many opportunities to work cooperatively with their
peers. The curriculum highlights the importance of critical thinking
skills, study skills, accessing and using information in meaningful
ways, understanding the connections between different ideas and concepts,
decision making and self-directed learning. Active participation is
encouraged at all times. It is also at this level that homework
expectations increase and letter grades appear on report cards.
The development of leadership skills is emphasized at the Intermediate level.
Class Captains are elected at the Grade Four and Five levels. Students
in Grades Five and Six are voted into office by all students from Grades
Three to Six. The Junior School Representatives to Council participate on
the Student Council. Junior School House Captains and Vice Captains
represent their individual Houses. The experience of a student in Grades
Four to Six at St. Margaret's is designed to foster self-esteem, to
develop academic potential and to motivate her to become a lifelong learner.
